Cosmetic Dentistry

Today, cosmetic dentistry is more popular than ever, from whitening and shaping to space filling and tooth replacement. The doctor has a wide range of tools and techniques at his disposal to improve the appearance of your smile.

Teeth Whitening

Bonding

Bonding can improve the aesthetics of your teeth if they have large gaps, are cracked, stained, or broken. The doctor usually performs this procedure in one appointment using tooth-colored composite resins that are placed on the surfaces of the teeth where needed.

Aspects

These custom veneers are usually made of porcelain (sometimes resin). They cover the front surface of teeth to change their color and/or shape. Veneers last longer than bonding and provide a stunning appearance. They cost less than crowns.

Veneers can improve teeth that:

 • They have gaps between them
• They are broken or worn out
• They are permanently colored
• They are incomplete or poorly formed
• It is slightly crooked

Before placing the veneers, the Dentist takes an impression of the teeth. The dental surface is then etched before the veneer is cemented into place. A beam of light helps the bonding agent cure, which ensures that the veneer is held firmly to the teeth. Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory, so you will need a second visit to the office to have them placed.

Crowns

Also called crowns or caps, they completely cover a tooth, restoring it with one that has a normal shape and appearance. You may need a crown to:

• Cover a discolored tooth
• Protect a weak tooth
• Restore a broken or worn tooth
• Cover a tooth with a large filling
• Build a bridge
• As an implant crown
• Cover a tooth that has undergone endodontic treatment (aneurosis)

Crowns can be made of metal, metal and porcelain (metal-ceramic), resin, or ceramic materials (zirconium).

The Dentist prepares the tooth before the crown, takes an impression, provides a temporary crown and in subsequent sessions places the final crown. Permanent crowns have a long lifespan as long as you take care of them.

Bridges

They are used to replace missing teeth with artificial ones. They can be made of gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these.
The dentist prepares the abutment teeth to receive the crowns which are joined together with a bridge that restores the gap. This creates the bridge which is bonded to the ground teeth. The success of the bridge depends on the way it is constructed and the condition of the abutment teeth as well as on oral hygiene.

Gingival plastic techniques

A number of other procedures can also improve your smile including surgical techniques for:

• Gummy smile correction
• Correction of teeth that appear too small or too large due to gums
• Covering exposed roots from gum recession
